MP learns the secret of 65 years of wedded bliss

Macclesfield MP David Rutley dropped in to see Ken and Margaret Torr to find out the secrets of their success as they celebrated their Blue Sapphire wedding anniversary.

The Higher Hurdsfield couple have been married for 65 years and are still going strong.  Mr and Mrs Torr first met at Sunday School in Macclesfield, but it was not until a few years later that romance blossomed.  Before her marriage, Mrs Torr lived in Manchester, where her father was a train driver, but would regularly visit her family in Macclesfield.  Her cousin had a shop where Mr Torr would call in for cigarettes and romance blossomed from there.

Mr and Mrs Torr have lived in Macclesfield for all of their married life.  They have two children, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

During his visit David asked them for the secrets of their happy marriage.  Mr Torr joked that “Doing as I’m told!” is the key.  He then added, “We are very fortunate.  You’ve got to give and take and that’s all there is to it.”  Mrs Torr said, “We’ve been fortunate to have a good marriage.”

David said, “It was lovely to meet Mr and Mrs Torr and share in their Blue Sapphire anniversary.  They are a lovely couple and their strong relationship is an inspiration.  I would like to wish them all the best in the years ahead.”
