Upton Priory pupils to design – and Fly the Flag

Macclesfield MP, David Rutley, has set pupils at Upton Priory School an exciting new challenge – to design a new flag to represent Macclesfield in Parliament.

The local MP launched the challenge, when he visited the school on Friday 14th November. The Flag Project is being run nationwide to celebrate next year’s 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta by King John and the establishment of the first British Parliament. The Project invites young people from across the UK to collaboratively create a shared picture of democracy.

Each Member of the House of Commons has been asked to nominate a primary school to create a flag to represent their constituency. Every single flag submitted will be published online and a number will fly in Parliament Square at a special event that will take place in March 2015. The flag should be A4 in size and double sided, including colours and images that represent Macclesfield.

David nominated Upton Priory School, following their success in designing a Parliamentary Sword for Macclesfield in a competition organised by the local MP in 2010.

In addition to the Flag Project announcement, David also had the chance to meet the school’s new Headteacher, Steve Kendrick. The day was extra special for the children, as they dressed up as their favourite superheroes for Children In Need – with some of the teachers even joining in the fun!

Speaking at the launch, David said, “I was delighted to see the enthusiastic response from the pupils to the Flag Project. I am looking forward to seeing the final designs, which I am sure will represent Macclesfield well. It was great to see the continued good progress the school is making and I wish the children every success with the project.”
