Mental health training workshop from SAS Daniels

Macclesfield law firm SAS Daniels is hosting a training workshop to help professionals working directly with people in debt to recognise signs of underlying mental health issues.
Debt can have a crippling effect on mental health and a survey by the national debt-help charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) revealed that 36% of people seeking help for debt had either considered or attempted suicide. It also showed that 67% had visited their GPs due to stress and 42% were taking prescription medicines.
The workshop on 23rd April at SAS Daniels office in Macclesfield will be delivered by the Campaign for Awareness of Mental Illness Among Debtors (CAMAID). It is designed to equip professionals with the tools they need to recognise signs of mental illness caused by debt; how to handle a situation if mental capacity is an issue; how to detect the tell-tale signs if someone is suicidal and how to respond.
SAS Daniels works closely with those in debt through its Insolvency & Corporate Recovery team, and its Elderly, Care and Mental Capacity team is experienced in taking care of the financial interests of those suffering with mental health issues. The law firm is therefore keen to support a campaign that helps to educate and inform professionals working with those in debt.
Paul Formby, Insolvency & Corporate Recovery associate at SAS Daniels said: “We are dedicated to helping raise awareness of those suffering from mental illness among people in debt and the impact it can have on both individuals and businesses.
“The workshop will not only help businesses identify when mental capacity is an issue and give them the right tools to deal with it, but it will also help individuals if they are dealing with businesses who are aware of what they are going through.”
CAMAID’s chief trainer, Nigel Crompton said: “During debt counselling, our experience has shown that those with suicidal thoughts are relieved to talk about it if they’re asked about it in the right way.
“A significant proportion of suicides across the UK are associated with debt but this figure could be reduced if professionals dealing with debtors, such as insolvency practitioners, accountants, solicitors and bankers understood more about the impact of debt and its effect on mental health.”
The workshop will take place on Thursday 23rd April 2015 from 9:00am -4.30pm at SAS Daniels LLP, Churchill Way, Macclesfield, SK11 6AY. To book a place on the workshop, please contact Sarah Evans on Tel: 0161 475 7696 or email: sarah.evans@sasdaniels.co.uk
