£30m Poynton relief road

Cheshire East Council is set to grant planning permission to the £30m Poynton relief road, a project it is undertaking jointly with Stockport Council.

The 3km single carriageway would link the A6 Manchester Airport relief road, which is currently under construction, to the A523 London Road.

The Poynton road is part of the South East Manchester Multi-Modal Scheme, a plan developed to improve existing transport problems on the south east side of Greater Manchester.

The discussion of the road route has been underway for a number of years, and was confirmed in 2016.

Within Stockport, the road would pass under the A5149 Chester Road and would travel in a southerly direction passing across the Woodford Aerodrome runway.

At the southern end of the scheme, which falls within the boundary of Cheshire East, the route would pass to the west of Adlington Business Park before connecting into a new roundabout junction to the west of the Adlington Travelodge. Links from this roundabout would allow the relief road to connect into the A523 London Road and Adlington Golf Centre.

According to a report to Cheshire East Council’s strategic planning board, which meets to discuss the scheme on Tuesday 10 January, while the proposal is “inappropriate development in the Green Belt”, subject to an enhanced package of mitigation and construction conditions, the harmful impacts can be reduced “to acceptable levels”.
