Macclesfield’s oldest former Silk Queen passes away

We’re saddened to report that Macclesfield’s oldest former Silk Queen, Alice Lilian King, passed away on the 7th February.

ilovemacc carried an item last the year, relating to a British Film Institute archive film of a Macclesfield Silk Queen’s coronation in 1933.

The BFI had been unable to trace details of the film’s star, but we were advised by the featured Silk Queen’s daughter that the lady’s name was Alice Lillian Handforth.

Known to everyone as Lillian, her daughter, Flora, told ilovemacc that Lillian was the daughter of William Handforth and Sarah Alice Handforth – who lived in Macclesfield at the time.

Lillian was due to celebrate her 103rd birthday in 23 February 2017.

Lillian will be buried in Kelso, Scottish Borders, beside her husband David.

Our sincere condolences go out to Lillian’s family and friends.
