Anchors aweigh for Sea Scouts 50th celebration

Macclesfield’s 15th Sea Scout division celebrating its 50th anniversary recently were joined by local MP, David Rutley.

A well-attended celebration party was held in honour of the special occasion at the United Reformed Church (URC) in Macclesfield, where the troop is based. As well as the Mayor of Macclesfield, Cllr Beverley Dooley, and the Scouts District Commissioner for Macclesfield and Congleton, Mark Eden, members were joined by several of the original team that set up the group in 1967, and many other former scouts and leaders.

The party was a great opportunity to celebrate all the Sea Scouts have achieved in their fifty years, and to look to the future. Mr Eden presented a 25-year long service award to Alec McNab, one of the group’s Assistant Scout Leaders, who leads its kayaking activities. Thanks were also given to the Church for hosting the scouts, and to Redesmere Sailing Club, which allows the troop to use its facilities for sailing and kayaking during the summer.

Macclesfield’s 15th Sea Scouts has around 50 members, made up of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers. It is currently recruiting for all sections, and anyone interested in joining can get in touch with the Group Contact, Richard Fieldhouse by telephone on 07714 432572, or email on richardfieldhouse@btinternet.com

Sea Scouting has the same purpose and values as any other Scout Troop, but with greater emphasis on water-based activities, incorporating aspects of naval and nautical traditions. It is recognised by the Royal Navy. There are only 100 Sea Scout groups in the country, which are maintained via biannual inspections, the last one of which was in November 2016.

Speaking after the event, David said, “It was great to join the 15th Macclesfield Sea Scouts for this very special occasion. Scouting helps to give young people important skills and confidence, and offers so many opportunities, whether that is taking part in aquatic sports or volunteering and giving something back to the community. I would encourage any young people interested in getting involved with the scouts to do so, and wish the 15th Macclesfield Sea Scouts every success for the future.”
