Churchill Way development news from Wake up Macc

You can now see the proposals for the Churchill Way cinema development on the How Planning website  http://www.howplanning.com/consultations/new-leisure-development-churchill-way-macclesfield

The deadline for comments is 5pm on 20 December.

No great surprises, though it’s worth noting that anyone hoping for a big screen cinema is probably in for a disappointment.

This is of course just developer pre-planning consultation. The next stage will be a planning application, when you will be able to make comments to the council about the scheme.

And on another subject – Macclesfield Multi Activity Centre is under threat of closure if they don’t get more people using it. That would be a huge shame, as it’s a great community facility.

Facilities/events include roller skating, bouldering wall, toddler wheels sessions, clubbercise, cafe. See more about what’s going on on the MAC Facebook page or on the centre’s website.

The centre started as a community interest company, and is about to become a charity.

Editor’s comment:

It’s utter madness to remove the town’s main car park.

Just a few years ago this car park was rammed full every day – if the Grosvenor Centre development is the success we all hope it will be, next spring, when it opens, the shoppers will return and need those spaces.

As footfall in the town increases, there’s a higher likelihood of other re-developments – such as Craven House and the Three Pigeons site being started.

When that happens demand for existing space could see Mill Street and Chestergate fully tenanted with smaller independent retail businesses.

The Grosvenor Centre, however, is happening right now – and will create instant demand for car parking spaces.

If this development goes ahead there’ll be around 300 spaces less – which is not only madness – but a slap in the face for the owners of the Grosvenor Centre – who are committed to investing £11 million in our town.
