Appeal for witness to sexual assault

Police are trying to trace a man who may have information about a serious sexual assault in Macclesfield.

Officers are appealing for the member of the public, who may have witnessed an altercation between a man and a woman on Buxton Road, Macclesfield, near to Victoria Park, to get in touch. It is believed that the woman approached the member of the public asking to use their mobile phone to call police.

The incident is believed to have taken place near the junction of York Street in the early hours of Saturday 16 September 2017.

DC Kelly Birch said: “If you remember being in the area between 2am and 4am and saw an altercation between a man and a woman or you were approached by a woman asking to use your phone to call police please contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 124 of 16 September 2017 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

A 23-year-old man from Macclesfield has been charged with two counts of assault, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, assault by penetration and rape.
