Engage with arts science programme

Cheshire East Council is offering the opportunity for residents to become digital ambassadors for a unique arts and science programme hosted at Jodrell Bank and Macclesfield.

The international art science residency exploring space, which is called Cosmos, takes place at world-renowned science centre Jodrell Bank.

The council is working with Abandon Normal Devices, (AND) which is an organisation that engages people with art-making and digital invention. As part of this programme, Jodrell Bank is opening its doors to Cheshire East residents to gain a valuable insight into digital arts and art science collaborations.

Ten residents will get the chance to participate in a series of workshops in the lead up to the Bluedot festival in July, headlined this year by The Chemical Brothers.

The programme includes receiving:

  • Two separate day training sessions in June and July delivered by AND ;
  • Insight and practical resources from AND ;
  • The opportunity to attend Bluedot and the Barnaby Festival in Macclesfield;
  • Individual guidance and peer-to-peer support; and
  • Budget to support travel to and from the events and training.

Funded by Arts Council England in partnership with the council as part of its Shift digital art development project, the aim of the programme is to build the confidence and skills of the attendees and to enable them to become art science ambassadors.

Councillor Don Stockton, Cheshire East Council cabinet member with responsibility for arts and culture, said: “It gives me a lot of pleasure to be able to open this up to residents in the borough and provide a means to create even more science ambassadors in the region.

“Opportunities to benefit from the expertise of scientists’ research, translated and visualised by artists through schemes like this, are few and far between and I’m confident that the 10 places will not take long to fill.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Jodrell Bank on our doorstep so it is great to team up with science and arts collaborators to get this off the ground.”
