Substation Bouldering centre opens

A new indoor bouldering and yoga centre, Substation Bouldering, has opened on Queen’s Avenue, Macclesfield

Substation Bouldering aims to provide the physical and mental benefits of climbing and yoga facilities under one roof, to people of all ages and abilities, with high-quality facilities. It will also help to put Macclesfield on the map for visitors attracted here by other outdoor activities, by helping to provide an alternative option for climbers during the wet weather.

Local MP, David Rutley, cut the ribbon, to officially open the centre and then joined the centre’s founders, Simon Stanway and Sam Gladman, for a tour of the 700 square-foot premises, which include a climbing wall constructed by one of the country’s leading climbing wall builders, a purpose-built yoga studio, and a cafe, serving hot and cold meals and beverages, and had the opportunity to try out the climbing wall for himself.

The new centre, which is based on Queen’s Avenue on Macclesfield’s Hurdsfield Industrial Estate, plans to run a range of sessions throughout the week, as well as additional events in school holiday time, with payment on either a session-by-session basis, or based on membership. Special classes for children and beginners will take place in the dedicated “Loft” space, and the centre will also be available to hire for parties or corporate events.

As well as making state-of-the-art climbing facilities available for use by local residents, David learned that the centre will create as many as ten new jobs locally within the first year of trading. Mr Stanway also explained the potential for collaborating with local schools, to make the facilities at the centre available for local pupils.

Speaking after his visit, David said, “It was great to officially open Substation Bouldering and to view the range of high-quality facilities available to bring the physical and mental health benefits of climbing and yoga, providing further opportunities for local residents to stay healthy and active. I wish Simon, Sam and all involved in developing this exciting facility every success for the future.”
