Tribute to ‘treasured’ accident victim

The family of a “treasured” man killed in a collision in Congleton have released a moving tribute.

George Grocott, 83, from Congelton, was killed on Sunday 17 February after he was hit by a car on Sandbach Road, Congleton.

The collision happened at 2.44pm and George was taken to the Royal Stoke Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

His daughter, Vivien Gibson, said her family were “blessed” to have known George who they described as “good natured”.

She said: “Our family has been blessed to have Dad (George) at its heart for 83 years. We have all been devastated by the tragic events leading to his death. On a bright Sunday afternoon George went to the shop, as he normally did several times a day, only this time he didn’t come back.

“Dad was a widower who had spent decades of his working life at Twyfords bathrooms until he retired. He was known for his gentle nature and for doing as much overtime as possible.

“He was a treasured Dad, Grandad and Great-Grandpa to us all. He was a good natured man that would be a Grandad to anyone who needed one. He offered help often before you realised you needed it.

“In later years he spent his time helping others – travelling from his home in Sandyford to Congleton most days to help his friend Pauline. Often making jokes with a smile he would cook meals, do the shopping, gardening and run errands. He was a true gentleman. His loss is more than devastating and a real shock to us all. We would like the thank everyone for the messages of condolence from the friends, neighbours and wider community. It is with such sadness that we have to say goodbye to him.”

Officers are still appealing for anyone with information about the collision to come forward and speak to police.
