Buxton Mountain Rescue fundraiser

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team’s annual fundraiser in Macclesfield town centre was another clear success – with an impressive £404.67 raised – thanks to the generosity of Macclesfield residents.

All donations made will go towards supporting the Team’s important and occasionally life-saving operations in the Peak District, including the purchase of medical equipment, first aid supplies, outdoor search, rescue kits, communication devices and vehicle maintenance, which currently costs around £25,000 a year.

The 60-strong Buxton Mountain Rescue Team (and their four search dogs) is the second busiest rescue team in the Peak District, covering an operational area of around 400 square miles across the counties of Cheshire, Derbyshire, and Staffordshire. On average, the team attends to around 70 team call outs per year, and 15 search dog call outs. The Team always welcomes new volunteers to assist with its operations. When local MP, David Rutley, went along to support the team’s fundraising efforts he learned of the team’s Fell Race, “Fell ‘n’ Back” taking place on Saturday 28th September. The race is organised by the Buxton Mountain Rescue volunteers.  Starting from the Burbage Institute on Nursery Lane, Buxton SK17 6UL, the 19.6 km race, with a climb of 730 metres, follows a route that includes parts of Goyts Moss, Axe Edge and Wildboarclough. Full Fell Runners Association kit (comprising waterproof jacket & trousers, hat, gloves, map, compass, whistle & emergency food) is required to take part, as is previous experience of fell running, and navigation skills. Entry is £10 via to book ahead, and £12 on the day, with all proceeds raised going to support the work of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team.

Speaking after the event, David said, “Buxton Mountain Rescue Service does such important work in the Peak District, which will be all the more vital in the coming weeks as visitor numbers increase over the summer. Without donations from the public, it would not be possible to provide this much-valued service, and so I am grateful to all local residents who gave generously at the fundraiser in Macclesfield. The team does incredible work and has my full support.”
