Bosley Tug of War Club are champs again!

Bosley Tug of War Club recently took part at the Tug of War Association National Indoor Tug of War Championships in Birmingham.

Indoor tug of war is different to the more well-known outdoor version of the sport with competitions taking place on special tug of war matting. Bosley are this year competing on the indoor circuit for the first time in around 10 years and are competing with a squad of 18 pullers.

The National Championships are held in six weight classes, with Bosley taking part in five of them at 560kg, 600kg, 640kg, 680kg and catchweight (where there is no weight limit).

The first National Indoor Tug of War Championships took place in 1966 and the last time that Bosley won a national indoor title was in 1981.

At this year’s AAA Indoor Championships, Bosley missed out on medals in the catchweight and 640 kg competitions, but made up for the disappointment of missing out on the medals in those weight classes by winning outright the 560 kg and 600 kg divisions – in the process defeating Kilroe from Lancashire in the two finals.

The club’s successful day was rounded off with a bronze medal in the 680 kg competition after defeating local rivals Sheen in the bronze medal match.

Bosley spokesman, Alan Knott commented: “these were great results for our club. We have recruited a number of new members this year, so decided to take part on the indoor circuit to get our newer members ready for the 2020 outdoor tug of war season.”

Alan continued: “we didn’t really know what to expect going into this years indoor tug of war season and we certainly didn’t start the season expecting to come away with a national indoor championships gold medal, so to come away with two gold medals as well as the additional bonus of a bronze medal is a remarkable achievement. We have now qualified to represent England at the British and Irish Championships which take place in Malvern in February where we will be up against other national teams from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland which will be a big step up for us, but it will be a great challenge against some of the other best indoor tug of war nations in the world at the present time.”

“We are always looking for new members to join our club – as the sport is held in weight categories, the more members of any size that we have, the more competitions we can enter, so if anyone is interested in joining our club, then feel free to make contact with us.”
