Art for Charity – a new gallery for Barnardo’s

Barnardo’s is launching a new gallery – Art for Charity – on Tuesday June 1 in Barnardo’s Thornton Square charity shop.

Artists featured have donated their work, with all profits going towards the charity which helps vulnerable children.

Artists include punk icon Gaye Black, also known as Gaye Advert, who played bass guitar in punk band The Adverts. Gaye has designed record sleeves for bands including PIL and has donated a limited edition, signed print, featuring The Ramones.

Award winning Professional artist Mark Sheeky, who has painted more than 600 surrealist paintings, has donated an original oil portrait of actress Liza Minnelli.

Artists from across the region are involved with featured work including ceramics, oil paintings, watercolours, textiles, linocut and sketches. Prices start at as little as £15 upwards.

Lin Purtill, Barnardo’s Manager, said: “I love art and have an artistic background and I want to share art with more people and make it more accessible.

“By working with artists, it is a great way to raise vital funds for Barnardo’s whilst giving the artists a platform to show their work, which could lead to future commissions and wider recognition.”

Alongside the gallery in the shop, Manager Lin and Sales Associate Kelly Quillan will be working with Adam Partridge auctioneers to hold an art auction for Barnado’s later this year.

Lin Purtill added: “It will be an opportunity for art lovers to buy something that they may not normally have the chance to and profits are helping out Barnado’s.”

Mark Fearn, a self taught Kerridge artist, known as Wonky Bolly Art, has donated several prints of his work, which have a distinct style and capture local landmarks.

Mark said: “It’s a great idea and there is something to suit everyone’s tastes. I’m really happy to be part of this initiative and would encourage people to come along and have a look at the gallery. I am going to supply more prints when the first ones sell and continue to work with Barnardo’s.”
