    Macc Lit & Phil programme 2021-22

    Membership of the Macclesfield Literary and Philosophical Society for the 2021-2022 season costs £20 per person which covers access to all meetings. 18 year-olds and under are free.

    Non-members can attend a meeting for a guest fee of £5. For Zoom meetings please email us.

    The Society usually meets at 7.30 pm at Macclesfield Library

    The September, October and April talks will be online only via Zoom at the usual starting time (7.30 pm). Members will be informed of the means of accessing Zoom talks beforehand. The remainder are at Macclesfield Library.

    Why should we read Ruskin?

    Professor Dinah Birch is Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Cultural Engagement and Professor of English Literature at Liverpool University. She is President of the British Association for Victorian Studies. She has a longstanding interest in the life and work of John Ruskin.

    How Universities and Industries can work together—despite their differences

    David B Williams was Dean of Engineering at Ohio State University. Before that he was President of the University of Alabama in Huntsville and VP Research at Lehigh University. His degrees were from Cambridge University and he is an expert in electron microscopy of materials.

    Jon Herbert is a senior lecturer at Keele University's Research Institute for the Social Sciences. He has a particular interest in the American Presidency and the US government as a whole.

    The Common Freedom of the People— John Lilburne and the English Revolution

    Michael Braddick, professor of history at Sheffield University, introduces the life of John Lilburne. Lilburne, who lived at the time of the 17th-century civil wars, was a leader of the Levellers in politics. Starting life as a Puritan he eventually became a Quaker.

    Housing in the Climate Crisis

    Claire Brown is a researcher at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Research in Manchester. She focuses on housing, in particular its energy demand. She is also a Teaching Fellow at Salford University.

    Orkney and the Ness of Brodgar: a 5,000 year old enigma.

    Nick Card is an archaeologist and director of the dig at the Ness of Brodgar in Orkney. His interests lie in all aspects of the prehistory of the Britain and the Highlands and Islands with particular reference to the Neolithic. He has been given many awards, including the Current Archaeology Research Project of the Year.

    Music, Magic and Dance in Latin America

    Grevel Lindop is a freelance poet, biographer and travel writer. His book Travels on the Dance Floor was a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week. He represented the UK at the Granada, Nicaragua Poetry Festival in 2012.
