Tanya and Edmund are swift enthusiasts and part of the national and international swift network. They set up a local swift group in Cumbria, Sedbergh Community Swifts, whose aim is to preserve these iconic birds that give such delight in summer as they swoop around our rooftops in towns and villages.
They have a colony of swifts nesting in the eaves of their cottage, with cameras installed, and their talk will include video clips of many aspects of swift behaviour. The latest research on their remarkable migration and their incredible aerial lifestyle will also be presented. Sadly these amazing birds are in serious decline and the reasons for this, and what can be done to help, will be discussed. Unless awareness is raised of the threats they face we could be in danger of losing our swifts altogether.

Peter was on the RSPB staff for more than 40 years. Initially he ran the RSPB's junior membership, during which time he devised the Big Garden Birdwatch. Later he headed the RSPB's volunteer programme. He has co-authored more than a dozen books, including the RSPB Handbook of British Birds. In the 2009 New Year's Honours list he was awarded an MBE for services to Nature Conservation.
The talk, based on aspects of his book of the same title looks at British birds and their amazing lives with the sort of information that most bird books leave out. He looks at their adaption and aspects of reproduction: from the secretive time of acquiring a territory and building a nest to their highly developed social behaviour and the roles of the different sexes. He will also consider the purpose of bird song, by listening to common examples, and will explore the mystery of mechanical sound used by a few familiar species. Finally, he will consider, if left to their own devices, how long can these birds survive in the wild.
