    Macclesfield Bikeathon 2020

Macclesfield is gearing up to welcome back The Macclesfield Bikeathon event once again which proved popular in the town for almost 20 years.

The Bikeathon which is funded by Macclesfield Town Council, returned to the town in 2019 and saw a fantastic 189 riders taking part. This year’s event will take place on Saturday 16th May and will raise money for local charity Just Drop In.

There will be 3 route options with varying distances including a 12-mile family ride which heads north out of Macclesfield, along the Middlewood Way towards Poynton where the route joins the road and heads south back towards Macclesfield.

The second ride is a 33-mile route around the beautiful Cheshire Plain with its quiet hedgerow lined lanes. The route heads west from Macclesfield towards Jodrell Bank then North towards the feed station at Great Warford Baptist Church. Then it goes onto Alderley Edge and Mottram St Andrew before returning to Macclesfield town centre.

For those looking for a more challenging ride, there is a 64 mile route on offer which heads towards Tatton Park, through more country lanes to Byley where the route turns for home, past the refreshment stop and the final push back to Macclesfield to collect finishers goodies.

The rides will all start and end in Market Place in the town centre. Here there will be lots of family activities and stalls to enjoy.

The event is being organised by Darren Allgood from Allgood Cycling who said ‘Organising the Bikeathon is such a rewarding experience. We get to work with brilliant local people generating community spirit and promoting health and fitness while raising money for local charity Just Drop In. Get on your bikes for a great cause!

Helena Gowler, Community Engagement Officer for Macclesfield Town Council which is funding the event commented that ‘Last year, the town council supported the return of the Bikeathon and it was great to see so many people taking part. The Council is delighted to be involved with the event again. This year there is the added bonus of a community event in the town centre which we are really looking forward to. Making physical activity the fun and easy option is important to the town council and the Bikeathon is a perfect fit with this.’

The Bikeathon will support local charity Just Drop In which provides support to young people in Macclesfield.

Ann Wright, Chief Executive Officer for Just Drop In commented that ‘This is a fabulous community event which we are terrifically proud to be involved in. It’s great to see so many people coming together to ride and have fun, while raising money to help others in their community. With the growing demand for emotional and mental health support, all the funds raised will go towards providing free counselling support to local young people.’
