  • TORQUAY 3 MACCLESFIELD TOWN 0

Macclesfield were brought back down to earth at Torquay.

It was a far cry from the Silkmen`s 4-0 thrashing of Wimbledon seven days earlier as Macc rarely threatened in the second half and could even have gone down by a more emphatic scoreline.

The goalless first half saw Tony Diagne force a good save from Torquay stopper Bobby Olejnik and Nat Brown headed wide from a Lewis Chalmers throw.

The hosts had put the ball in the net but Chris McPhee`s early effort was ruled out by an offside flag.

But just after the hour mark, Macc conceded to the simplest of set-pieces, Brian Saah rising highest to thump in a six-yard header.

The goal clearly incensed Macc boss Gary Simpson and his players struggled to regain their composure, and after the unmarked Ian Morris wasted a header from close range, Chris McPhee fizzed a low shot straight at Jose Veiga.

The Gulls` second will have done little to ease Simpson`s anger, as captain Lee Mansell skipped past numerous half-challenges and, although his shot was skewed, it fell perfectly for McPhee to stroke home.

Eunan O`Kane set up McPhee with a storming run down the right flank, only Veiga`s firm hand denying him, but in the closing moments, O`Kane went through himself and the keeper was powerless to stop his neat chip for number three.
