Macclesfield VE Day Celebration
When Friday 8th May was declared a national bank holiday to allow families to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day, plans began for a celebration concert in South Park.
On Friday 8th May 12-4pm, the South Park bandstand will come alive with the sounds of wartime music and performances. Stalls and themed family activities will surround the bandstand. There will be free face painting on offer and the concert is completely free to enjoy.
The iconic La Petit Frog will be there on the day serving crepes and drinks or you can bring your picnic, pitch up on the grassed area near the bandstand and enjoy the show!
Macclesfield Academy have very kindly offered the use of their car park for visitors to the event.
Along with the music event in South Park, The Cheshire Villages Great War Society will be staging a Tribute Exhibition at the Salvation Army Hall, Roe Street, Macclesfield, on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 May to commemorate the Ladies and Gentlemen of Macclesfield who perished in WW2. There will also be limited information of those who fought and returned.
The hall will be open from 10am until 5pm each day. Admission is free and there will be refreshments available.
These events are being organised in partnership between Macclesfield Town Council, Macclesfield Royal British Legion, the Cheshire Villages Great War Society and the Macclesfield Veterans Breakfast Club.
Judy Higginson Secretary of the Macclesfield branch of the Royal British Legion said The branch are honoured to be part of the VE Day Celebrations. On the 8th of May we will be remembering the Men and Women of Macclesfield who didn’t come home. ‘We will remember them’.
