Peak time meeting for MP

Our MP, David Rutley, met the new Chief Executive of the Peak District National Park Authority, Sarah Fowler, to discuss future plans for the National Park.

David and Sarah talked about a number of opportunities to boost tourism in the Peak District – for both day trips and longer stay visitors – which could have benefits for Macclesfield. While the Authority has an important role to protect and conserve the Park, it is also vital that more is done to encourage a wider range of visitors to enjoy and be inspired by all the Peak District has to offer.

Macclesfield is fortunate to have the Peak District on its doorstep and is a natural gateway for more people to visit the Park – and for those visiting the park to come into Macclesfield. Developing a stronger tourism offer for the town linked with the Peak District will help many local businesses which rely on the visitor economy.

David has been a keen supporter of the Peak District, since becoming MP for Macclesfield in 2010. He is Secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for National Parks, as well as co-chair of the Mountaineering APPG. He is a strong advocate for a national strategy for outdoor recreation and believes that the Peak District, and the other National Parks, have an important role to play in realising this strategy.

The Peak District National Park is 555 square miles (1,438 square kilometres) in size, and covers parts of the counties of Derbyshire, Staffordshire, and Cheshire. The purpose of the National Park Authority is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Peak District, whilst promoting opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the District’s special qualities. The Authority also takes a positive role in fostering the economic and social well-being of the local communities.

Speaking following the meeting, David said, “It was a pleasure to meet Sarah and to learn more about her vision for the Peak District in the months and years ahead. Sarah comes into the role with directly relevant experience and real enthusiasm for the task ahead. I wish Sarah every success and look forward to working with her on key issues in future.”
