Your health matters

The next talk in the Health Matters programme will be held on Tuesday 6th October 2015, between 7-8 pm, and will be presented by Sara Nausheen, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.

Starting at 7pm, in the lecture theatre, the talk will aim to give women a basic understanding of the causes of urinary incontinence (Ul) such as stress incontinence, urge incontinence and mixed incontinence; to improve the knowledge and management of urinary incontinence and discuss the polarising points of view regarding the management strategies and treatment for women who live with the condition.

Dr Nausheen said: “Urinary incontinence is described by patients as the ‘complaint of involuntary loss of urine’ and it affects both men and women, however many of those affected do not seek help as it is considered a taboo. It is likely that three to six million people in the UK may have some degree of urinary incontinence. In particular the condition is prevalent in around 13-35% of British women of all ages with a wide range of severity. Urinary incontinence can cause disastrous consequences by having a major impact on all aspects of life including physical, social, psychological and sexual wellbeing.

“Although Ul is a common problem, it goes under-reported and there are often long delays between onset and when women seek help for it. A quarter of incontinent women wait more than 5 years before seeking medical help due to embarrassment.

Through this free public health lecture I will seek to explain the factors that can cause urinary incontinence, clarify the various symptoms and available treatment and encourage women to seek assistance in order to better manage their conditions.”

Dr Nausheen has been a consultant at the trust for five years working across obstetrics and gynaecology with special interest in urogynaecology. Dr Nausheen also leads clinical audits at the trust. Outside of work she travels widely and participates in charitable endeavours.
