Your Health Matters!

The next ‘Health Matters’ talk, which takes place at Macclesfield Hospital on Tuesday, April 5th, will be delivered by consultant Ophthalmologist, Mr Arun Sachdev.

Mr Sachdev will talk about the main causes of sight loss as we get older namely: Cataract and Age related Macular Degeneration (AMD). He will discuss the early symptoms of AMD dry and wet and the current and new emerging treatments for these conditions.

The older a person gets, the more likely they are to develop at least some degree of AMD which currently affects more than 600,000 people in the UK and is the leading cause of vision loss. AMD tends to be more common in women than men. It’s also more common in white and Chinese people and in people over the age of 50. It is estimated 1 in every 10 people over 65 have some degree of AMD.

Mr Sachdev said, “A large part of preventing early sight loss can be as simple as dietary and lifestyle changes that could prevent the development and progression of these disorders. Early awareness is crucial to helping to stop the symptoms from getting worse, developing these conditions and the progression of these disorders which may then require operative treatment.”

Mr Sachdev has been a Consultant Ophthalmic surgeon, working at Macclesfield District General Hospital for three years. His special interests are in the fields of cataract, treatment of macular degeneration and diabetes. He is also the clinical head of the Cheshire Diabetic Screening Program and supports the Macclesfield eye society. Outside of his work at the Trust Mr Sachdev is passionate about cricket, Sikh history artefacts and antiques.

The talk takes place at 7pm in Macclesfield Hospital’s Lecture Theatre (near the Treetops Restaurant) on the first floor on Tuesday, 5 April 2016.
