Macclesfield shoppers have proven just how charitable they are after more than £1,200 was donated to Marie Curie, in just two days.

On Friday 4 and Saturday 5 March, volunteers for the charity were based in the Grosvenor Centre and just outside on Macclesfield Street. In that time, members of the public donated the truly remarkable sum to the charity as part of the Marie Curie Great Daffodil Appeal 2016.

Grosvenor Centre Manager, Ed Kennedy, said he was delighted that shoppers had given so generously. “I’m thrilled at the amount raised,” said Ed. “To collect such a large amount in such a short period of time is staggering.

“I’ve seen first-hand how kind-hearted shoppers in Macclesfield are through our various charitable activities that take place here during the year. I’m extremely proud that we’ve been able to help be a part of raising such an outstanding amount of money.”

The collection was run by the local Marie Curie Macclesfield Fundraising Group, who help to raise vital funds in Macclesfield and the surrounding areas.

Jessica Herrington, East Cheshire Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie, said the money raised by shoppers in Macclesfield would make a huge difference to the charity. “Every £20 that is collected funds one hour of nursing care for those with terminal illnesses. The donations that we received from being in the centre and on Macclesfield Street means that patients will be able to receive more than 62 hours of care. I really can’t thank everyone at the Grosvenor Centre and the people of Macclesfield enough.”
