Constabulary awarded disability confident leader status

Cheshire Constabulary has been awarded Disability Confident ‘Leader’ status – the highest status which can be achieved by an organisation.

The Disability Confident scheme is nationally recognised and encourages employers to be positive about the skills that people with disabilities can bring to the workforce, and to remove barriers to recruiting and retaining employees with disabilities.

The scheme has three levels – Employer, Committed and Leader – and recognises organisations that demonstrate that they make the most of the opportunities provided by employing people with disabilities.

After having been awarded ‘Leader’ status following an assessment by the Business Disability Forum and Department for Work & Pensions (DWP), Acting Chief Constable Janette McCormick said: “Cheshire Constabulary aims to be an employer of choice, striving to be representative of the communities we serve.

“The award raises awareness of the opportunities for a career in the Constabulary. It further demonstrates our commitment to inclusion and acceptance for people from diverse backgrounds in the workplace, ensuring that those with disabilities and long term health conditions have the opportunities to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations.”

Police and Crime Commissioner David Keane added: “Together with the Acting Chief Constable, I am committed to ensuring Cheshire Police is a truly inclusive and supportive employer.

“There are many varied roles in the Constabulary, and the new status is one way to demonstrate that commitment as well as acting as a champion to our local and business communities.”

Dave McMahon, disability staff network lead added: “As disability network lead for the force I am delighted that the force has been given this accolade.

“As a disabled member of staff, the reward rightfully recognises the inclusivity of employment that the force offers.

“I hope potential applicants for roles within the force are encouraged by this award which recognises the value and commitment that the organisation displays.”
