Market trader found drowned in canal

The man who found dead in Macclesfield canal has been named by police as David Reed, 45, from Macclesfield.

David’s body was found by a passer by, close to Barracks Lane.

As well as having a wool and sweet market stall in Macclesfield Market, David was a volunteer at the Senior Citizens Hall.

In a statement yesterday, a spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: “Officers were called to reports of a body in the canal at 12.05pm on Thursday, July 12. The body has been retrieved and was taken to the undertakers. The canal was closed for period but reopened at 2.15pm.”

“At this point it is not being treated as suspicious at the current time and a case file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Editor: David was a genuinely nice person who I’d often encounter in Macclesfield Market Place. I’ll really miss having a chat with him on my regular Friday and Saturday visits to the town centre. Our sincere condolences to his family.
