Traffic brought to halt by town centre incident

The arrest of a car driver and passenger brought traffic to a halt in Macclesfield town centre today.

At around 11.30 am (Friday, 20th July) a black Audi, travelling down Chestergate towards the junction of Churchill Way traffic lights, was stopped by Cheshire police officers.

Five police vehicles plus two unmarked police cars, stationed both on the junction and behind the apprehended vehicle, brought all traffic to a halt.

Police officers dragged the man from his car and brought him to the ground

Following a prolonged struggle the driver was dragged from the car by three uniformed officers and a plain clothes officer.

Joined by several more officers, the man was eventually brought to the floor.

With the man being held down officers demanded, several times, for the driver to “spit it out” – after which at least one of the officers was seen to “bag’ the contents emitted from the driver’s mouth.

A number of banknotes were also seen to be seized by officers.

It’s thought the man had tried to swallow a mobile phone SIM card – but this later appeared to have been recovered.

An ilovemacc contributor was on the spot and caught the action on video – despite the efforts of one police officer, to prevent him by blocking his view.
