CHESHIRE EAST DENY CHANGES AT LYME GREEN WASTE SITE

Cheshire East plans to store recyclable waste including paper, cans and bottles at the Lyme Green depot off London Road before it goes to a sorting facility at Deeside.

Some residents say they have picked the wrong location and are fighting the plans because of traffic fears.

But after the council dug a large hole, some also believe the authority has started work during consultation before the submission of a planning application.

Seamus Rogers, 77, of Lindrum Avenue near the site, said: If I started work on a planning application before I`d had permission the council would be annoyed and I`m miffed that they appear to have started.

But a Cheshire East Spokeswoman denied they had begun, blaming repair works for their presence.

She added: The site is currently undergoing extensive clearing in advance of the highways depot moving from Sutton to Congleton in January next year.

During this work, problems were encountered with poor ground conditions and large areas of soft spots, making the area unstable. These problems have not been encountered before and as the owner of the land, Cheshire East Council saw fit to ensure the area was made safe.

The work is related to the general condition of the land and not to the proposed waste transfer site for which Cheshire East Council is in the process of seeking planning permission.

Residents can be assured that the stabilisation works should be completed shortly. All work on the land will then cease, pending the outcome of the planning application. The council cannot and will not establish a waste transfer station at Lyme Green without a valid planning permission being in place.

The scheme was revealed to 40 residents at a public meeting organised by Coun Hilda Gaddum. In response to traffic concerns raised, CEC said collection vehicles would access the site less than 20 times a day.

The Lyme Green site currently houses the highways department depot, which will be moved to Congleton.
