Up the creek with a paddle

Alongside members of Macclesfield and District Canoe Club, local MP, David Rutley, took to the water for the Club’s Go Canoeing event on Saturday 2nd June.

Held on the Macclesfield Canal at Adelphi Mill on Grimshaw Lane in Bollington, Go Canoeing is an annual fixture of the Club’s calendar, and aims to encourage people of whatever age and ability to pick up a paddle and enjoy the many benefits of canoeing or kayaking. An impressive forty-five local residents took part in the free event, with equipment kindly provided by the Club. The event is part of the nationally co-ordinated Go Canoeing campaign, spearheaded by British Canoeing.

As well as spending some time on the water, David took the opportunity to meet with the Club’s hard-working volunteers, and thanked them for all their efforts to organise the event. He also spoke with the former Club Chairman, Andrew Millest, about Club’s plans for the future, and the varied activities available for local residents to enjoy, which include: touring; moving water trips; flat water racing; and sea paddling.

Local residents who were not able to attend the Go Canoeing event but who are still interested in experiencing canoeing are welcome to attend the Club’s regular Monday night club sessions on Macclesfield canal at Adelphi Mill, at 7pm between April and September (excluding Bank Holiday Mondays). It isn’t necessary to be a member of the Club to take part, but there is a £10 fee for use of equipment and instruction for non-members. The Club advises people to bring a complete change of clothes, as well as shoes that can be worn in a canoe, a towel, and an old cagoule or windproof jacket for use on the water.
