Macclesfield Bikeathon returns

Macclesfield is preparing to welcome back the Bikeathon event which proved popular in the town for almost 20 years.

The Bikeathon which is funded by Macclesfield Town Council, will take place on Saturday 11th May and will raise money for local charity Just Drop In.  There will be 3 route options with varying distances. A 6 mile family ride, a 30-mile ride and a more challenging 60 mile ride around the Cheshire Plain will be on offer. The rides will all start and end at Macclesfield Leisure Centre.

The event is being organised by Darren Allgood from Allgood Cycling who said ‘I have fond memories of the Bikeathon and remember the whole town getting behind the event and thought it would be brilliant if we could successfully resurrect it!’

Not only will participants cycle parts of the Cheshire countryside, but they will also go on a well-rounded tour of the area, with an opportunity to ride happily in the knowledge that their miles will be making a difference.

There will be a refreshment stop along the route before the final push back to Macclesfield to collect a well-earned medal.

Helena Gowler, Community Engagement Officer for Macclesfield Town Council which is funding the event commented that ‘The Council is delighted to be involved with bringing the Bikeathon back to the town. We have heard from so many people just how well loved this event was. Making physical activity the fun and easy option is one of the aims of the town council and the Bikeathon is a perfect fit with this.’

The Bikeathon will support local charity Just Drop In which provides support to young people in Macclesfield.

Ann Wright, Chief Executive Officer for Just Drop in commented that ‘Just Drop-In is delighted to be a beneficiary of the 2019 Bikeathon. As a Macclesfield charity we are passionate about our community and it’s great to see the Bikeathon back with proceeds going towards helping local young people to find their feet’
