WHO`S UP FOR A COMMUNITY CHOIR?

For many years now I`ve sung with two large choirs of up to 250 voices in venues like The Bridgewater Hall; Leeds Town Hall; The Royal Albert Hall; Epcot, Florida where we were part of Disney`s Candlelight Festival; and just a few weeks ago I sang at Disneyland Paris as part of their first Christmas Choral Celebration. I don`t have a particularly good voice nor do I read music very well, but with good vocal coaching and lots of practice, the choirs make a tremendous sound! For each choir, no auditions have been required unless you wanted to perform solo. And if I can`t hit the notes – I mime! I`ve sung classical, Broadway and West End, The Beatles and Don`t Stop Believing – so anything goes.

It`s a wonderful thing to be a part of and can be very moving, or really exciting and a privilege to perform in many places. I`ve been really struck this year by Gareth Malone`s work with the Military Wives` Choir, and many choirs have sprung up over the country in recent years. I`ve also been impressed by the wonderful changes in Macclesfield in the last couple of years with festivals and markets and am much more tempted into the town and to feel part of the community. So it could be a great time for us to have our own Community Choir? We would need a gifted and enthusiastic musical director and lots of enthusiastic people willing to give it a go!

It would be great to hear what others think.

I look forward to Macclesfield Community Choir performing at next year`s Macclesfield Winterfest. (ed)
