6 July 2014 – Tea and Talks at Macclesfield Community Artspace

Mathew Hyde – History through the window…..
A pleasant Sunday afternoon session of tea, delicious home-made cakes and a stimulating talk – what better way to pass a couple of hours !
And so local historian the Mathew Hyde entertained an entranced audience of 30 people in ArtSpace, on the third floor of The Arsenal , Gunco Lane with his illustrated exhibition of how the surrounding area had developed from the 18th century onwards.
The historical canter took in the copper works, brickworks and clay pits through the later development of silk and paper mills, canals and railways in the 19th century to the 20th century concentration of small scale industries which still thrive – intermingled with a variety of houses characteristic of this part of Macclesfield.
The talk was enlivened by views out of the large picture windows of the mill – downwards towards parts of town and then upwards to the canal and the hills beyond, as well as an examination of early maps, drawings and photographs mainly from the 1970s when redevelopment removed some of the older buildings and industries. There were several fascinating plans from the late 1800s from which one person was even able to see when her house must have been built!
Finally, the history of the town was outlined by reference to the three banners recently completed for display during the Barnaby Festival and which now provide a permanent reminder of the town’s colourful past and the famous people associated with it – from Charles Roe to Ian Curtis !  It is hoped to find a permanent home for display which will be accessible to the public, although it can also be borrowed for Community events
Macclesfield Community Artspace host the “Tea and Talks” sessions on the first Sunday of the month from 4 to 5.30pm – all are welcome to attend – the next series starts in October.
