New Head of Operations for Buxton Opera House

Audiences at Buxton Opera House may have noticed a new face in charge of the front-of-house operation in recent weeks.  26-year-old Steve Sargeant has joined the Senior Leadership Team as Head of Operations.

Steve, who comes direct from doing a similar post at London’s Battersea Arts Centre said of his new role:

“I hope to take Buxton Opera House to the next level in customer service, whilst at the same time celebrate the outstanding work the volunteers do already.

“And it’s really important to capitalise on the theatre’s recent award for Most Welcoming Theatre in the East Midlands, consistently providing an outstanding welcome, regardless if audiences are going to see ballet or a rock band.”

Steve Sargeant is the youngest member of the Senior Membership Team, which he attributes to his energy and experience.

“I have been really lucky in that I think I’ve had almost every single job in theatre.  Thinking back I think the only thing I haven’t done is wigs.”

Customers may also start to notice some exciting innovations that he believes will improve customer experience.

“We don’t want to do anything that is going to damage the magic we have in the front-of -house or change the tone of the theatre. But there was a real pull to come to Buxton, as it has such fantastic potential.”

“I think there’s a lot to do here and I can really make my mark and drive things forward.”

Steve, who grew up on a cattle farm in Calton, says he first visited the Opera House at six-year’s old.

“My grandparents used to bring me all the time, to see whatever was on. It’s a venue that has a really, really special place in my heart and I’m thrilled to join the team.

“I moved to London for University and was there for about 8 or 9 years working across the city. What that means is I have really wide range of experience and understanding of how a contemporary theatre works. I feel really privileged to bring that experience back home.”

Steve is also on the lookout for volunteers to join him in the front-of-house team and wants to encourage anyone of any age or background to come forward and see what it is like to work in a theatre.

“We have a fantastic, welcoming, warm and inclusive organisation – everyone really is welcomed to get involved.”
