Murder investigation following death of Poynton police officer

The Daily Mirror reports that tributes have poured in to a “beautiful” serving police officer found dead at a popular beauty spot as police launch a murder investigation.

Mum-of-three Leanne McKie was discovered in a lake in the early hours of yesterday morning after what police described as an isolated incident.

The popular officer was mum to two young girls and a boy and worked for Greater Manchester Police.

Last night shocked friends paid tribute to the 39-year-old who was married to husband Darren, 43.

A former neighbour who lived near her in Wilmslow said: “It is so sad. They really were a smashing and charming family.

“Really nice, very friendly. When they moved in they brought us round a gift and we used to exchange Christmas cards.”

Another added: “They were a nice family, we used to see their three children. I can’t believe this has happened.”

Leanne, from Wilmslow, was found in water in Poynton in Cheshire after police were called at around 3.45am yesterday to reports a body had been found in the lake at Poynton Park.

Cheshire Police say they believe the incident is isolated and that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

Social media was flooded with tributes for Ms McKie.

Si Steele said: “One of the nicest women you could ever wish to meet. Never had a bad word about anyone. I’m genuinely heartbroken.

“I feel so sorry for her three beautiful children.”

Si Toft added: “Leanne mckie was one of the most beautiful women I know. Taken too soon and cruely. Rip beautiful girl. (sic).”

He then tweeted: “Such a beautiful and amazing woman taken too soon. The pleasure was all mine leanne. Sleep peacefully. (sic).”

Colin Price added: “Such a lovely girl and family. So sad and three young children who have to come to terms with this tragedy.”

Richie Mac added: “Absolutely tragic news, Leanne was a lovely person, one of the truly genuine ones. Rest in peace.”

Detective Inspector Adam Waller said: “Investigations into her death are currently ongoing and we are working hard to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Leanne was a mother of three young children and a serving police officer in Greater Manchester Police.

“Our thoughts at this difficult time are with Leanne’s family, friends and colleagues.

“I would like to reassure local residents that at this stage this appears to be an isolated incident and we are not looking for anyone else in relation to her death.”

A 43-year-old man from Wilmslow has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.
