Another historic Macclesfield pub is heading for closure.
The site of a ginger beer brewery in the 1860s – The British Flag on Coare Street, has been put up for sale with plans to convert the boozer into a house.
Known locally as ‘The Flag’, the pub, on the corner of Coare Street and Pownall Street, is valued at £250,000.
In October 2024, the pub re-applied for permission to convert it into a house claiming the business was no longer a viable. A previous application had been refused by Cheshire East owing to insufficient evidence regarding the community value of the pub, its viability as a business and the absence of recent marketing efforts.
Pub owner Lloyd Roberts, has now provides the requested information.
The planning statement, from Smashbox Architecture, states: “While the pub once served as a popular venue for sporting events and social gatherings, changing consumer habits, increased competition from cafés and pop-up bars and the advent of at-home entertainment have contributed to its decline.”
The pub is being marketed by Sidney Phillips Ltd, North West.
A listing on property website Rightmove states: “The British Flag trades as a wet-led public house which serves the local community. The premises has a long history: it was constructed in the early part of 19th century and was a Ginger Beer Brewery in the 1860s”.
The public house has its own Golf Society and formerly hosted pool, darts and skittles nights.
