Podcast takes Chester Zoo listeners behind-the-scenes.

A six-part podcast, Abi Clarke: Zookeeper in Training, follows popular comedian Abi Clarke as she embarks on an unforgettable zookeeper’s journey.

The show is Chester Zoo’s first official podcast, offering listeners a unique glimpse into life at the UK’s most popular conservation zoo.

From meeting rare giraffes and caring for endangered giant otters to helping relocate a flock of 107 flamingos, the series captures Abi’s humorous and heartfelt attempts to get hands-on with some of the world’s most threatened species – and the expert teams working tirelessly to protect them.

Abi Clarke, a stand-up comedian who rose to fame through viral comedy sketches and now boasts over two million followers across social media, brings her trademark energy and curiosity to the role. She said “I’m having the best time hosting the podcast. As an animal lover, it’s a privilege to have such unique access to Chester Zoo and meet so many rare and precious animals – as you’ll hear, I really get stuck in!”

With a strong following among younger audiences, Abi’s involvement supports Chester Zoo’s mission to inspire the next generation of conservationists. The series aims to educate and entertain, while highlighting the vital role young people play in shaping a more sustainable future for wildlife and the planet.

Vicky Ashdown, AV Production and Talent Manager at Chester Zoo, said: “When people visit Chester Zoo, they may not realise the breadth of species-saving work that happens behind-the-scenes – from iconic mammals like critically endangered rhinos to tiny snails, vibrant birds and even rare plants.

“Partnering with Abi has given us a fun, engaging way to showcase the extraordinary stories of the animals and the people who care for them. This isn’t your typical wildlife podcast, think The Secret Life of the Zoo but through a comedic lens – we can’t wait for people to hear it.”
