At 4.24 pm on Friday 4 July a man wearing a balaclava approached the rear of Greggs Bakery in Wilmslow Road and assaulted a member of staff with a hammer. The victim ran to the front of the shop to alert his colleagues, who telephoned for the police.

The suspect tried to open a safe but failed and made off.
