A petition to prevent the closure of a bridge at Quarry Bank Mill has secured nearly 2,500 supporters.

The National Trust has announced it will be closing Giant’s Castle Bridge at Quarry Bank, on Monday, June 16, owing to safety concerns. Reece Sanford, who created the petition on Change.org, has asked The Trust to rethink its plans.

Reece believes the bridge is crucial for walkers in Styal Woods and is encouraging the charity to repair it instead.

Reece said: “The bridge is a crucial access point for the breathtaking walks through Styal Woods, providing locals and visitors alike with the opportunity to experience the beauty of our natural surroundings.

“The National Trust, known for its commitment to preserving heritage sites and natural landscapes, must act quickly to repair Giant Castle’s Bridge. Restoring this pathway is not merely about convenience but about safeguarding the rich experiences and connections with nature it affords.

“Many like us, rely on this path for their daily walks, enjoying the scenic views and peace it brings.”

General manager for Quarry Bank National Trust, Roz Stone, has said the charity had looked into the possibility of replacing or relocating the bridge, however the cost would be significant.

“We’ve taken the regrettable decision to permanently close the Giant’s Castle footbridge.

“Recent inspections have shown significant deterioration in the structure and the safety of our visitors is always a priority.

“Feasibility studies have shown that it would cost a significant sum of money to replace or relocate the bridge, and we do not currently have the funds available.

“Maintaining the vast estate at Quarry Bank costs millions of pounds each year, and as a charity we often have to make difficult choices regarding our financial priorities.

“We haven’t taken this decision lightly, and of course we appreciate the disappointment it will cause.

“We remain committed to providing local people access to green spaces and have introduced two alternative walking routes across the estate.”

Two other trails – Arthur’s Wood Loop and Giant’s Castle Viewpoint – have been prepared by the Trust, which Reece says are good, but do not give people the chance to explore the full area.
