Appeal for witnesses to Cumberland St crash

Police investigating an incident at the Cumberland Street/Churchill Way roundabout are appealing for witnesses.

At around 11.15 am yesterday (Tuesday 17 June), a van collided with a pedestrian, at the roundabout with the junction of Cumberland Street, Churchill Way and Hibel Road.

The male pedestrian, believed to be in his late 50s, sustained serious injuries and sadly, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and a 32-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the incident.

The man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Sergeant Simon Degg said: “We are in the early stages of our investigation into the full circumstances of this incident, and we have arrested one individual as part of our enquiries into what happened.

“We would urge any witnesses to this incident to contact us. The same goes for anyone who may have any CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident or any further information.”
