President James Anderton of The Rotary club of Macclesfield Castle was handed the reins of the club from Michael Drapes in front of 60 members and guests last week. James said ‘he was delighted to take on the role with such a vibrant club which had recently been awarded the Rotary David Hopkin trophy for a 25% growth in membership’. This was due in part to the change in club dynamics and focus over the last few years appealing to a wider range of the community.

James planned to continue the focus on young people from the new Rotakids group to starting an Interact club to engage young people who are the building blocks of Rotary giving them a ‘sense of community’. This would be in parallel with the schools ‘mock interviewing’ undertaken at several schools in Macclesfield.   At the other end of the spectrum there are plans to focus on alleviating isolation and loneliness’ amongst the elderly and the Rotary community group would continue with the annual senior citizens party. Advice and funding for local groups would continue as well as our international programme which last year supported the Nepal appeal, Ebola crisis and Polio eradication.

The Rotary theme this year is ‘Be a gift to the world’. With an enthusiastic and growing membership and utilising the members skills we can all make a difference to improve our community.
