Puss Bank pupils visit to Parliament

Pupils from Puss Bank School in Macclesfield were greeted by local MP, David Rutley, when they visited the Houses of Parliament to ask him to support the “Send My Friend To School” campaign.

The School group went on a tour of the famous building, which was arranged by the Parliamentary Education Service. Following the tour, David met the pupils for a Question and Answer session, where they presented him with many well crafted letters of support for the nationwide campaign.

Pupils from Years 3 and 4 at the School wrote individual messages for David, making him aware that there currently 38 million children across the world who are not in school. The campaign is encouraging children across the UK to add their voice, with over 12,000 messages submitted so far, ahead of a United Nations meeting taking place in September on the issue.

Send My Friend to School is run by the UK coalition of the Global Campaign for Education. The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) is a global organisation working to ensure quality education for all children. It has members in more than 100 countries around the world. In the UK, over twenty charities and teaching unions work together in favour of education for all as the GCE UK coalition.

Speaking after the Q&A session, David said, “I was delighted to be able to meet Puss Bank School pupils in Parliament. The children told me that they had had a great time in London, and I am very pleased that they have taken part in the “Send My Friend To School” campaign. Education should be an opportunity for everyone globally, and I shall be writing to the Prime Minister, and the International Development Secretary, Justine Greening, respectively, with the pupils’ messages of support for the campaign. I look forward to making them aware of the pupils’ support for this important issue.”
