Bollington War Memorial dedication

At its dedication ceremony, local MP, David Rutley, paid tribute to the outstanding community spirit, and to project organisers that have helped make the new Bollington War Memorial possible.

The new memorial had was dedicated on 11th October, following a Parade and speeches from David Briggs MBE, Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, and Cllr Angela Williams, Mayor of Bollington.

The new memorial was commissioned as the original sandstone memorial had begun to erode and could not be repaired. The new memorial also provides an opportunity to acknowledge and remember the names of twenty additional men, whose names had previously been omitted.  The two new memorial stones were built using local Kerridge Stone, and were carved by locally based stonemasons.

The memorial project was taken forward by Cllr Allan Williams, Bollington’s Deputy Mayor, and Treasurer of the Project, with Deryck Sutton BEM, Memorial Project Chairman. It has been paid for by the local community, with welcome support from Cheshire East Council, and was a key project during the previous mayoralty of Cllr Amanda Stott, who made the Bollington War Memorial Fund her selected charity while she was Bollington Town Mayor.

Speaking after the ceremony, David said, “This is a fitting tribute to the brave fallen of Bollington, and I would like to pay tribute to the tremendous community spirit which has helped to deliver the new memorial earlier than expected. I would like to put on the record my thanks to all those involved in delivering this important memorial in Bollington.”
