Spellbinding classical music

Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre is presenting a series of top-class music events during the autumn/winter season.

Each month The Pavilion Gardens offers the chance to see some of the most talented classical musicians in the country during an hour-long lunchtime concert.

Entitled Coffee Concerts, the next performance from The Lowry Brass Quintet is scheduled in for 12th Nov, offering a musical medley of tuba, horn, trombone and trumpet.

Following which (9 Dec) a very special Coffee Concert will welcome the joint leader of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, violinist James Clark to take to the stage with principal cellist Jonathan Aasgaard.

The concert marks the second performance of the society’s residency in Buxton. Ensemble 10/10 the contemporary arm of Liverpool Philharmonic will open the residency (3 Nov), performing the world premiere of a new work by Nigel Osborne.

The highlight of the three-dates will be a concert with RLP Orchestra directed by ‘artist in residence’, violinist and conductor Julian Rachlin (27 November). The orchestra, which is the longest surviving in the UK, will fill the Opera House with two spellbinding pieces by Mozart and Mendelssohn.

Classical music lovers can also mark New Year’s Eve in their diary as the Annual Gala Concert returns at the end of the year with the British Philharmonic Orchestra performing orchestral favourites from opera, ballet and film.

Whilst in the New Year (8 January) Northern Chamber Orchestra, which has accompanied the Buxton Festival since 1996 visits Buxton Opera House for A Viennese Gala, performing pieces from composers like Strauss, Lehár, Stolz and Liszt.
