A summer of adventure at Lyme

This summer the garden at Lyme will once again be alive with children’s stories and beautiful illustrations.
‘The Art of Lauren Child: Adventures with Charlie and Lola and friends’, an exhibition and interactive trail featuring many of the wonderful characters created by award winning children’s writer and illustrator Lauren Child will take place in the garden of this beautiful National Trust property from 2 July – 4 September. The trail will bring to life Lauren Child’s distinctive characters, including Charlie and Lola, Clarice Bean, daring girl detective Ruby Redfort, Hubert Horatio, and The Storybook Wolves. Many pieces of Lauren’s original artwork from her books will be on display in the Orangery.
There will be the opportunity for visitors to meet Lauren Child and have their favourite book signed when we welcome her to Lyme for the opening of the trail and exhibition on Saturday 2 July.
Visitor Experience Manager, Caroline Heap says “We can’t wait for Lauren Child’s visit to Lyme on 2 July. Her beautiful artwork and wonderful characters are loved by so many of our family visitors.” She adds, “It’s going to be magical to see the garden bursting with activity all summer as families enjoy the exhibition and our garden trail. We’ve got fun activity sacks too so families can relax on a picnic rug and read Lauren Child stories amongst the stunning surroundings of the garden.”
It’s been sixteen years since Lauren Child created her award-winning illustrated story about a little sister called Lola who will ‘not ever NEVER’ eat a tomato, and her brother Charlie’s highly imaginative efforts to change her mind. Lauren is now one of the most popular and successful author/illustrators of all time, with worldwide sales of over three million. She has received huge critical acclaim.
Charlie and Lola have become known around the world through both books and a BAFTA award-winning television series. In addition to her well known characters, Lauren has created illustrations for new editions of classic tales such as ‘The Princess and the Pea’, and ‘The Secret Garden’.
The trail and exhibition are open every day from Saturday 2 July – Sunday 4 September, 11am – 4.30pm. Garden and estate entry applies. Free for National Trust members and under 5s.
