Get ready – for a riot of fun!

Get ready for a riot of fun as Jimmy Cauty’s art installation, the ADP Riot Tour, comes to Macclesfield.

Organisers have arranged lots of activities to accompany the main installation, a 40ft shipping container housing a miniature post-apocalyptic world which can be spied through peepholes in the walls of the container.

The ADP Riot Tour (which stands for Aftermath Dislocation Principle) will sit outside B&M Bargains in Exchange Square car park, Macclesfield, from Tuesday 15 to Monday 21 November. Extra activities and events are planned for school groups during the week and the wider community on Saturday 19^th. And all of it FREE.

Neil Puttick, one of the organisers of this crowd-funded project says: “We’ve planned lots of lively activities to respond to the container artwork, with more than 20 artists involved. On Tuesday 15^th there’s an opening night celebration at 6.30pm with a whole lot of noise in Exchange Square, followed by a ticketed party at MASH GURU with special guest, artist Jimmy Cauty.”

“Then on Saturday 19^th we’ve got placard making workshops run by local poet, Ailsa Holland, and a chance for people to build their own miniature townscapes using maps of Macclesfield and the world, with Shabby Road Studios artist, Becca Smith. In the afternoon there’ll be soap box discussions, poetry readings and word games, and as night falls we’ve got DJs and projections too. Everyone is welcome to come along and have a go at something new, as well as paint their own mark on the shipping container itself.”

People are also being asked to bring along tinned food and non-perishable goods which will be used to build a Wall of Food: the donations will be given to Macclesfield’s Silklife Foodbank to help local families enjoy a Christmas dinner.

Jimmy Cauty’s installation was the highlight of Banksy’s Dismaland exhibition at Weston-Super-Mere last year and showed at the Royal Academy this summer. Organisers are thrilled to have raised enough money through crowd-funding to be able to bring the Riot Tour to Macclesfield.

Says Neil Puttick: “This is a great opportunity to take part in a community happening that marks a significant event in the town’s history, the Market Riot of 1812. It’s also very apt, coming at a time when the world is experiencing such political and social upheaval so it’s a chance for people to express themselves through art and collaboration.”

Local artist, Ralph McGaul, was inspired by the Market Riot to produce a limited edition woodcut print which is being sold to raise further funds for the project. The print costs £55 and just a few remain. For more information, please contact maccloop@googlemail.com.

The ADP Riot Tour is at Exchange Square car park, Macclesfield, from Tuesday 15 to Monday 21 November, with a chance to peer inside the container from 11am to 7pm every day.
