Art by those with learning disabilities

Macclesfield Library will host a two-week art exhibition of work by people with learning disabilities.

The artists attend three Macclesfield-based day service centres – Brocklehurst, Mayfield and the Lifestyle Centre – which provide specialist social care daytime support for adults with learning disabilities, autism, epilepsy and dementia.

The artists are very proud of their achievements and are delighted to be coming together under the banner of the exhibition to show off their work.

Councillor Janet Clowes, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for adult social care and integration, said: “It’s brilliant to see our day centres joining forces and putting on this exhibition. It’s clear that the positive experiences members of our centres benefit from are heavily influenced by the sensory elements of their environments, allowing them to get much more out of visits.

“I’m delighted that Macclesfield Library is putting on this exhibition, too. There’s an incredible range of work taking place across our centres and libraries and it’s always a great pleasure to be able to highlight that in this way.”

Birgit Grimshaw, a community support worker at the Mayfield Centre, said: “I’m just thrilled that the exhibition is taking place. I’m lucky enough to see the joy that being involved in these art sessions brings to our members.

“We would love for people in Macclesfield to get involved, come down and meet some of our artists and find out more about the inspiration behind their works. There’s plenty to see, whether it be paintings, sculptures, collages or simply brilliant explosions of colour brought to life on canvas.”
