£1,200 whisky goes under the hammer

Looking for a very special Christmas present for the whisky-lover in your life?

How about a bottle of Macallan Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky, bottled in 1996 for the 35th anniversary of the satirical magazine Private Eye – complete with the label, designed by Ralph Steadman – which reads ‘could be 196 years old’ and numbered 3495/5000.

The whisky is going up for auction at Macclesfield auctioneers, Adam Partridge in the sale running from 14th December.

You will however, need deep pockets to purchase the whisky – which is estimated to be sold for between £800 to £1,200.

To this will be added the buyer’s premium of 20% – but that does include the VAT. And, if you want to bid online, I’m afraid that’s extra – and could take the final bill to £1,500. Then again, it’s an auction and could well go for more.

For those with less expensive tastes and shallower pockets there are many other, more reasonably priced, bottles of single malt that will going under the hammer in the three-day sale.
