Bosley Tug of War season opener

Bosley Tug of War Club hosted a successful tug of war competition at Woodford Memorial Hall.

The event was part of the Tug of War Association’s national league which takes place at different venues around the country throughout the year. A number of clubs from around the country took part in the event, including a teams from as far afield as Cumbria and Somerset, with weight classes taking place for mens teams, ladies teams and mixed teams.

Bedford Ladies

The host club Bosley didn’t finish amongst the medals on this occasion, placing third in the the 600kg and mixed 580kg competition (where teams compete with 4 men and 4 ladies each), however Lincoln and Bedford Ladies finished as the main winners of the day winning 3 mens and 3 ladies weight classes respectively. Upper Eden from Cumbria won the mixed 580kg competition, and Felton Eccles from Somerset won the the mens 640kg competition.

Sandbach YFC

Sandbach YFC were another local club who took part in the event and they gave a good account of themselves against a number of established clubs, competing well and getting some good wins under their belts.

In addition to the men’s competitions, the event also saw a ladies and junior competition take place, with Bosley being able to field a full ladies tam for the very first time.

“It wasn’t a bad start to the season for us” commented Bosley spokesman Alan Knott.

“it was good to put in a solid performance at our home event, but obviously we would have liked to have got to the final of one of the weight classes”

“It was our first competition of the year, so hopefully our results from the day will spur us on as we prepare for the forthcoming national tug of war championships on 18 June, which this year take place in Bedford.

Lincoln

“it was very pleasing to be able to field a ladies team this year, and we hope to recruit more ladies as the season goes on”

“tug of war is a very inclusive team sport, and anyone who comes along to one of our training sessions, which take place every Tuesday and Thursday evening, will be made to feel very welcome”

Bosley spokesman Alan Knott thanked everyone who came along to support the event, with thanks being extended to the Woodford Memorial Hall Committee for providing the venue, and the J.S. Trophies for supplying the prizes for the event.

Bosley Tug of War Club will also be helping to stage tug of war events at the Equine Lane Cheshire Horse Show on Sunday 29 May at Tabley House, and the Cheshire Game and Angling Fair at Peover Hall on Sunday 7 August, so there will be further opportunities to see some local tug of war events later in the year. The annual Macclesfield Sheepdog Trials Friday evening 6 a side tug of war competition will also be taking place on Friday 5th August and is always a fun event.
