Poynton relief road’s final checks

Ahead of the planned opening of the Poynton Relief Road, Cheshire East Council Deputy Leader, Councillor Craig Browne and Macclesfield MP, David Rutley, visited the site.

The formal ribbon cutting ceremony will be taking place on Friday 3rd March.

The major £53 million project will he reduce traffic congestion in and around Poynton. The 3 km road scheme will also help improve air quality for local residents and open up land for employment.

It will be open to traffic on the morning of Monday 6th March.

Cheshire East Council’s contractor, Graham, is now putting the finishing touches to the road to prepare for it being opened to the public.

The road will be named the Roy Chadwick Way after the engineer who designed the Lancaster Bomber, who tragically died during a test flight at the site in 1947. It is a lasting memorial to this pioneering aviator.

Councillor Craig Browne, Deputy Leader of Cheshire East Council and chair of the authority’s highways and transport committee, said, “This has been a fantastic scheme and means a great deal to the people of Poynton, Woodford and Bramhall and it was a pleasure to visit the road ahead of its completion with the local MP, David Rutley, who has been a great supporter of this project. I am looking forward to the ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday 3rd March, prior to the road being open to traffic on the following Monday 6th March.”

After the review meeting, David said, “The opening of the Poynton Relief Road is a major step forward in improving local infrastructure and easing traffic congestion in the village. Having actively campaigned with local Councillors and residents for this road for many years, it is so positive to see the scheme now being completed. It is an honour to have supported this campaign and to work with the Government and Cheshire East Council in helping to bring this project to a successful conclusion. The road will make a real difference for Poynton’s residents for decades to come.”
