Macclesfield wide heritage open day

National campaign Heritage Open Day comes to Macclesfield on Saturday 9th September.

Billed as England’s largest festival of history and culture, every September organisations and buildings across the country throw open their doors to give you a chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences, all of which are free to explore … and this year Macclesfield is taking part!

At the time of writing eight organisations around the town will be welcoming members of the public to take a peek behind the scenes – take part in a walking tour with the Silk Museum, try bell-ringing at St. Michaels Church or pop into the Creative Coffee morning at the Library.

Heritage Open Day also happens to coincide with the 200th birthday of Macclesfield’s Grade II* listed Town Hall.  A building owned by Cheshire East Council and mainly used for meetings and events, Macclesfield Town Council will be welcoming the public in to celebrate Macclesfield and it’s people.

Made In Macc are running a local makers market in the Assembly Room which happily fits with the theme of this years’ Heritage Open Day which is ‘celebration of creativity’ – what could be better than celebrating Macclesfield’s makers.  Two rooms are being dedicated to local volunteer and hobby fairs, there will be discussions of an exciting new local history project plus plenty of information about the historic Town Hall and it’s rooms.

There’s loads to explore all over town and it’s all totally FREE. For a full list of everyone taking part head to the ’whats on’ page at Macclesfield-tc.gov.uk or head into town on Saturday 9th September and look out for the pink bunting!

Plus to mark Heritage Open Day we want anyone 16 years old and under, to draw, paint, create a picture of your favourite Macclesfield building or landmark!

Your pictures will be used to create a map of Macclesfield in the Grosvenor Shopping Centre, Macclesfield as part of Macclesfield Heritage Open Day. Hand in your artwork at Macclesfield Library or the Silk Museum by Saturday 2nd September.

Two lucky artists will be drawn at random and win free tickets to a family art session at The New Macclesfield School of Art plus a Macclesfield bookmark and postcard set from Adam Francis Illustrator
