The Hub at the heart of Gawsworth

Celebrating the importance of community was at the top of the agenda when local MP, David Rutley, visited Gawsworth Hub.

The Hub is run by volunteers for the benefit of the local community and comprises a shop, café and meeting place.

During his visit, David met with members of the Board including Chairman, Neil Phillips, and other volunteers.

His visit was prompted by the launch of the Association of Convenience Stores Rural Shop Report 2024 which outlines the difference that rural shops make as both local employers and champions of their communities.

During the meeting, the team outlined to David the work they have been doing to expand its outreach. The meeting space within the Hub fosters community spirit and wider engagement. Visitors can enjoy a coffee and cake in a welcoming environment that encourages social interaction, making it a much-loved spot for residents to gather.

Board member Becky Vaudrey set out the variety of community groups the Hub has to offer, such as Knit and Knatter and the innovative Repair Café, which offers residents the opportunity to bring in items for repair, promoting sustainability and reducing waste. The Hub works closely with other local organisations, such as the Rossendale Trust, collaborating to support adults with learning disabilities in the workplace.

Community events are also a priority for the Hub, reinforcing its role as the beating heart of Gawsworth. Recent highlights were the fully booked New Year’s Eve party and Village Pantomime. Additionally, the Hub organises an annual barbecue to express gratitude to its 60 volunteers, whose dedication and hard work are pivotal to its success.

Speaking after the visit David said, “Community stores play a vital role in village life. Gawsworth Hub goes the extra mile with a wide array of initiatives on offer. I am grateful to all the many volunteers who make this possible and I hope local residents continue to actively use their services and support upcoming events.”
